Tejo – Discover the Traditional Colombian Sport

Tejo, a fascinating traditional Colombian sport, has captivated players for centuries. With a rich history and unique gameplay, Tejo is exclusive to Colombia, enjoyed both recreationally and competitively. Let’s delve into the world of Tejo and uncover the excitement it holds.

The Basics of Tejo

Tejo requires minimal equipment, making it accessible to all. Players utilize a wooden box known as a post, metal discs called tejos, and a target. The post measures 90cm wide and 1m long, with a 35 to 45-degree angle cut, filled with clay. To prevent off-target tejos from leaving the field, a protective board is placed behind the post.

The tejos themselves are metal discs. A circular metal ring serves as the target, securely fastened to the middle of the post. The target features small triangular pouches filled with gunpowder, known as ‘mecha,’ which create an explosive effect upon impact.

The Objective and Scoring System

To play Tejo, participants must throw the tejos at the target from a distance of 20m. Points are awarded based on where the tejo lands on the post. There are four possible scoring plays:

  1. Hand (1 point) – The tejo that is closest to the target.
  2. Hit (3 points) – When the mecha explodes upon impact.
  3. Bullseye (6 points) – When the tejo lands inside the target.
  4. Strike (9 points) – Achieved when a throw results in both hitting the target and landing inside the bullseye.
