Shot Put Back Throw Test

The Shot Put Back Throw Test is a measure of body explosive power and is one of the tests used in the International Physical Fitness Test. It is also part of the power quadrathlon assessment.

Purpose

This test is designed to measure core body strength and total body power.

Equipment Required

To perform this test, you will need a tape measure, a clear open area for testing, and a shot put. For the International Fitness Test, an 8 lb shot put is used, while for Quadrathlon, a 16 lb (male) or 12 lb (female) shot put is used.

Pre-Test

Before conducting the test, make sure to explain the procedures to the subject. Perform a screening of health risks and obtain informed consent. Prepare the necessary forms and record basic information such as age, height, body weight, and gender. Additionally, ensure that the subject performs an appropriate warm-up.

Procedure

The athlete starts with their back to the throwing area, heels at the start line, and the shot put cradled in both hands between the knees. The subject bends forward and downward before throwing the shot backwards over their head in a two-handed throwing action, ideally at a 45-degree angle. It may take a few practice attempts to achieve the best trajectory for maximum distance.

Scoring

The measurement for this test is taken from the starting line to the point of impact of the shot put with the ground. The result is recorded in meters and centimeters. The best result out of two or three trials is recorded.

Target Population

This test is relevant for sports that require total body power.

Advantages

The Shot Put Back Throw Test is easy and quick to perform, with the necessary equipment readily available in most sports departments.

Disadvantages

Conducting this test smoothly requires several people: one to mark results, another to check technique, and another to collect and return the shot put. If testing a large group of participants, it can be time-consuming to put all of them through this test.

Tips

It is essential to consider the angle at which the shot put is thrown for maximal distance. Make sure to explain this concept to the subject and allow for some practice attempts.
