Flexibility Exercises for Golf

by Mike Pedersen

Flexibility exercise for golf is a crucial aspect of achieving a consistent, powerful, and mechanically sound golf swing. Senior golfers, in particular, can benefit greatly from incorporating flexibility exercises into their routine. As we age, our flexibility and strength naturally decline, making it essential for senior golfers to focus on maintaining pliability and responsiveness in their muscles to meet the physical demands of the golf swing.

To generate maximum power in the golf swing, a higher level of flexibility is required. Turning the upper body (shoulders) 90 degrees while maintaining less than half of that with the hip turn requires significant dynamic strength and flexibility.

It never fails to surprise me when I explain these physical demands and restrictions to golfers. By visually demonstrating and explaining the swing, I can help them understand the impact that physical limitations can have on their golf game. While it can be challenging to convey this information through an article, my goal is always to provide a clear visual representation.

The sooner golfers recognize the necessity of flexibility exercises for golf, the sooner they will see improvements in their game. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to witness incredible “golf transformations” with the golfers I have worked with. Through comprehensive testing before they began, including evaluating their backswing and follow-through range as well as initial posture setup and restrictions, I have witnessed remarkable results, particularly in senior golfers. This improvement is often linked to their starting level of fitness.

That is why I consistently emphasize to golfers, “It’s NEVER too late!” Every day that passes without taking action is a missed opportunity for progress. Don’t let another day slip away. Start your flexibility exercise regimen right away!

Now, let’s define flexibility exercise for golf. To understand it better, let’s analyze the golf swing. Assume your golf posture right now and break down the swing into phases. Imagine taking the club back just a couple of feet.

Where do you feel tension in your body so far?

If you pay close attention to your body, you will notice tension in the back of your legs (hamstrings), your left hip, the back of your left arm, and even your lower back (if you are a right-handed golfer).

Now, let’s take it back further. Where do you feel tension now?

As you continue your swing, you will start feeling tension in your right shoulder, your core (from rotating), and more in your upper left back muscle and shoulder.

It’s incredible to slow down the swing and realize the limitations of your flexibility. This realization should serve as a wake-up call to prioritize flexibility exercises for golf.

While I won’t go through the entire swing in detail, I hope you grasp the idea of which muscles need regular stretching to release tension in your golf swing and enhance your power output.

The key now is to begin stretching those “golf muscles” we just discussed. Assume your golf posture, make a partial swing, and stop. Hold that position for 15 seconds, then continue throughout the entire swing, incorporating this static (holding) stretching technique. You should also integrate dynamic (moving) stretching into your routine.

I hope you now understand the importance of flexibility exercises for golf and are motivated to incorporate them into your practice.

FAQs

  • Q: Are flexibility exercises suitable for golfers of all ages?

    • A: Absolutely! Flexibility exercises are beneficial for golfers of all ages, but they are particularly important for senior golfers who may experience a decline in flexibility and strength.
  • Q: How often should I perform flexibility exercises?

    • A: To see optimal results, aim to incorporate flexibility exercises into your routine at least three to four times a week. However, listen to your body and adjust the frequency based on your individual needs and recovery.
  • Q: Can flexibility exercises improve my golf swing?

    • A: Yes, flexibility exercises can improve your golf swing by enhancing your range of motion, allowing for a more fluid and powerful swing. Increasing your flexibility can also help prevent injuries commonly associated with golf.

Conclusion

Flexibility exercises are an integral part of achieving a successful golf swing. By focusing on enhancing flexibility in the specific muscles involved in the golf swing, you can release tension and improve power output. Remember, it’s never too late to start incorporating flexibility exercises into your routine. Take action today and experience the transformative impact on your golf game.
