The Longest Football Throw

Throwing the football both accurately and for distance is a crucial skill for any American football quarterback. While most throws in a game cover a short distance, some players have demonstrated incredible long-distance throws of up to 70 yards (64 meters) during games when necessary.

One notable event that showcased the long-distance throw was the NFL QB Challenge, which featured a distance throwing competition alongside other events like speed and mobility, accuracy, and the read and recognition test. Each quarterback had two throws, with the best result counting. To be considered valid, the throw had to land within a narrow alley.

While many sources indicate that the competition took place from 1990 to 2007, there are references to earlier competitions and a video that mentions Vinnie Testaverde achieving a record throw of 80 yards in 1988. Additionally, there are mentions of competitions held in Hawaii during the 1980s.

Here are some notable performers from past competitions:

1993

  • Randall Cunningham reportedly won with a throw of 76 yards.

1996 Quarterback Challenge

2003 Quarterback Challenge

  • Carson Palmer and Byron Leftwich both threw the ball 65 yards.

2005 Quarterback Challenge

  • Participants included Drew Brees, Matt Hasslebeck, Ben Roethlisberger, Carson Palmer, and more.

It’s worth mentioning a few interesting football-related facts:

  • In 1983, Jim Plunkett of the Raiders threw a 99-yard touchdown pass, the longest in NFL history. However, it’s important to note that the ball was not thrown the entire 99 yards; the receiver caught the ball after a shorter throw and ran the rest of the way.

  • NASA astronaut Tim Kopra threw a football pass down the length of the International Space Station. Given the station’s speed of 17,500 mph (28,163 km/h), the ball technically covered about 8,800 yards per second (8046 m/s) as seen from Earth. In total, the ball traveled an impressive 564,664 yards (516,328 meters).

While some claims have been made about record-breaking throws by quarterbacks Mark Brunell and Doug Flutie, there is no concrete evidence to support these assertions.
