3-Cone Shuttle Drill Test (L-Drill)

The 3-Cone Shuttle Drill, also known as the L-Drill, is a popular agility test used in the fitness testing battery for the NFL Combine. It has replaced the “4 Cone” or “Box” drill and is designed to assess agility, speed, quickness, flexibility, change of direction, and body control.

Purpose

The purpose of the 3-Cone Shuttle Drill is to evaluate an individual’s agility and athletic ability. It measures how quickly and efficiently a player can change direction and navigate a course. This test is particularly relevant for athletes in team sports such as football, basketball, hockey, rugby, and soccer.

Equipment Required

To conduct the 3-Cone Shuttle Drill, you will need the following equipment:

  • Stopwatch
  • Measuring tape or a marked football field
  • Marker cones
  • A flat non-slip surface

Test Layout

The test layout consists of three marker cones positioned to form an “L” shape. The cones are placed at the corner and at each end, 5 yards apart. Please refer to the diagram for a visual representation of the course.

Procedure

  1. The player starts in a three-point stance next to Cone 1.
  2. On the command “Go,” the player runs to Cone 2 and touches a line with their right hand.
  3. The player then turns and runs back to Cone 1, touching the line with their right hand again.
  4. Next, the player runs back to Cone 2 and goes around the outside of it.
  5. They then weave inside Cone 3 and continue around the outside of Cones 3 and 2.
  6. Finally, the player finishes at Cone 1.
  7. It’s important to note that the player must run forward while altering their running direction, rather than simply stopping and starting in opposite directions.
  8. Each time the drill is performed, the player should curve in a different direction (e.g., curving left on the first attempt and curving right on the second attempt).

Scoring

The time taken to complete the test in seconds is recorded, and the best time out of two trials is used as the final score.

Results

US Decathlete Bryan Clay achieved a remarkable time of 7.85 seconds in this test during a SPARQ testing exercise, as published in SPARQ Magazine (Summer 2008). The 3-Cone Shuttle Drill is also a featured test in the NFL Combine, where athletes showcase their agility and overall athleticism.
